Biography
Merisa L. Piper, MD, is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. She received her Bachelor's of Science at Claremont McKenna College, where she graduated cum laude. She then spent several years working in a basic science laboratory investigating the mechanism of hypothalamic leptin resistance at the Diabetes Center at UCSF. She attended medical school at the University of California, Irvine, where she graduated with high honors. She then completed her residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at UCSF, and spent one year of research investigating breast reconstruction outcomes and developing a phase II clinical trial. Following residency, she completed a fellowship in microsurgery at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Piper's clinical practice includes all aspects of breast reconstruction, as well as a broad range of reconstructive and aesthetic surgery procedures. She specializes in microsurgery and free tissue transfer. Her research interests lie in breast reconstruction clinical outcomes, with focuses in oncoplastic surgery and microsurgery. She has authored over 25 papers and has presented her work nationally and internationally. She is a breast section editor for Annals of Plastic Surgery, and is a guest reviewer for four scientific journals.
