Pamela Derish Imparts Scientific Writing Skills to University of Chicago Surgery Residents
To support its faculty in their scientific publishing and grant writing efforts, and to provide specialized training in writing skills for its trainees, the Department of Surgery at UCSF established its Scientific Publications Office in 2004. One former trainee who now chairs the Resident Research Advisory Committee for the University of Chicago Department of Surgery invited Pamela Derish, M.A., Scientific Publications Manager for the UCSF Department of Surgery, to give a three-day seminar for its surgical residents. Topics included writing fundamentals, research articles, and grant proposals. Writing and publishing are key to successful career development and academic survival for faculty and trainees, and for disseminating the expertise and accomplishments of an academic department of surgery.
