Lactation Fund for Trainees

Resident Lactation Supply Fund

The department is committed to providing safe and welcoming work environment for lactating residents returning to clinical duties. In addition to the measures outlined in the UCSF Department of Surgery Lactation Wellness Policy, the department will provide the funds to purchase lactation equipment to allow residents to pump while at work, especially at non-UCSF sites where lactation support may be limited. This commitment will cover any lactation equipment expenses of up to $500 per lactating resident. These expenses may include wearable breast pumps and supplies. The department does not recommend any particular brand or type of breast pump and will leave it up to the residents’ discretion to choose how to use this fund to support their individual lactation needs. This fund will only be provided once during residency training.

Reimbursement Process

To obtain reimbursement, requests can be made via the Resident Reimbursement Request form.  Allowable dates for the receipts for reimbursement include from 6 months prior to the due date to one year after delivery.  For reasons related to Office of Human Resources, reimbursements cannot be processed while residents are on leave; receipts should be submitted either prior to leave or after returning to clinical duties. Please note that receipts submitted for reimbursement later than 60 days after the purchase date will be treated as taxable income.  Please contact the Education Office if you have any questions.
