The Department of Surgery is pleased to announce Dr. Melissa Coleman as Associate Program Director in the General Surgery Residency Program. Dr. Coleman will be the Associate Program Director of Curriculum.

Dr. Melissa Coleman is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. She graduated from Weill Cornell Medical College in 2007, completed general surgery residency at Duke University and Brigham and Women's Hospital, and completed cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at UCSF in 2019. During her time as a faculty member at UCSF, Dr. Coleman has been a dedicated educator with a focus on curriculum development in cardiothoracic surgery. She completed the UCSF teaching scholars’ program and is pursuing her master's degree in health professional education at UC Berkeley. Her clinical practice spans the breadth of thoracic surgical disease at UCSF Parnassus and ZSFGH, while attending in the ICU at UCSF as well. She has been a dedicated and active teacher, having developed and executed the cardiothoracic surgery didactic curriculum. She is a tremendous advocate, ally, and mentor for trainees at all levels.

In her APD role, Dr. Coleman will oversee the structured learning activities of the general surgery residency program. She will also serve as a resource and advocate for under-represented members of the general surgery residency program.
