Mentors for New Surgeon Parents

We acknowledge that you may have questions and anxiety about how best to balance your new role as a parent with your ambitions as a surgeon and are committed to supporting you. In addition to the written information available, we have found that having direct support from another surgeon who can offer experience-based advice is even more helpful.

The mentors are parents and surgeons, and some have also had their children during training. They have been through many of the same experiences you are going through and are excited to volunteer as mentors to you during this transition to parenthood. Examples of how previous mentees have used the mentor/mentee relationship include discussing challenges operating during long cases in the third trimester, childcare difficulties, perceptions of stigma, advice for pumping on busy OR days, how to find time for family during training, how to balance childcare duties with your partner, or talking about difficult rotations.

While it is up to you when and how to meet, we strongly suggest that you plan to meet 3 or more times with your mentor (including at least one meeting after welcoming your baby). Other than that, there are no other requirements to participate as a mentee.

As surgeons, we are taught to be independent and strong, but we hope you will take the time to meet with your chosen mentor over a coffee or lunch to discuss your new dual roles as Surgeon and Parent.
